The fashion industry is the second largest pollution sector in the world after the oil business. The fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global water waste, 21 billion tons of garbage per year, and 10% of global carbon emissions. Each year 20 billion sneakers are made worldwide. The manufacturing of the footwear industry is responsible for 1.4% of the greenhouse gas emission steaming from production. 97% of these sneakers get into landfills or burned. Only 3% get a second use in low-developed countries or are shredded and get used for horse track field padding.
This Project, in collaboration with Komrads.world propose a better solution. We offer you a product that will be fully circular with a minimum impact on our environment.
The S.M.O.S. is a totally recycled circular slipper. By recycling old used sneakers, shredding them into granulate particles, and mixing these shredded granulates with a polymer, we will be able to injection mold this material into a new product. With this process, we will be able to reuse 70% of an old shoe to produce the S.M.O.S, a new sustainable, circular, and no-waste slipper.
Because it is expensive to injection-mold the whole slipper out of 1 material, we decided to go with a separate sole and upper. The sole is made out of the sneaker mix, and the upper will be made of the standard Komrads textile materials ( SEAQUAL and apple leather ).
