KUKOSA, A cultural void.
My work is shaped by the profound influence of cultural heritage, reflecting my Congolese roots and my upbringing in the West. Though physically removed from my homeland, the spirit of Congolese culture remains deeply ingrained in me, manifesting in ways that transcend physical borders. This collection is an intimate pursuit of reconnection a means of reclaiming what time and distance have eroded.
Delving into Congo’s rich artistic and architectural legacy, I sought to distill its timeless essence not as a mere aesthetic exercise, but as a deeply personal exploration. My goal was not simply to merge influences but to craft a narrative that embodies the intricacies of identity, heritage, and movement an interplay between past, present, and future.
This collection features four pieces: a bench, a rek, a stool, and a headrest. Each piece is infused with themes of support, unity, and equilibrium, drawing from Congolese design philosophies while engaging in contemporary discourse. More than functional objects, they serve as vessels of cultural storytelling, bridging tradition and innovation. In this ongoing dialogue between history and modernity, I seek to reconcile the different facets of my identity and invite new perspectives within the world of design.
